Water retention is also known as fluid retention or edema. This can occurs in the face, hand feet, ankles and legs which is the most common.
The English word “edema”comes from the Greek word oidema, meaning “a swelling tumor” which is derived from the Greek verb oidein meaning “to swell”.
Up to 70% of the human body consists of water. Water exists both inside and outside the body’s cells. Blood is mostly made of water, so is our organs and muscles.
Causes of water retention may be diagnosed by a chest x-ray, blood tests, urine tests, liver function tests or heart function tests.
