Massage is the act of treating the body by pressing, rubbing, kneading, patting to stimulate circulation, increase suppleness and to relive tension etc. It involves manipulating your skin, muscles, tendons and ligaments. Massage may range from light stroking to deep pressure.
Here are some common types of massages:
Swedish – This is a gentle form of massage that uses long strokes, kneading, deep circular movements, vibration and tapping to help relax and energize. The manipulation of the movements usually involves the application of oil to facilitate.
Shiatsu – This Japanese name describes a massage technique that includes the use of acupressure and it usually does not involve the application of oil. The Chinese has a similar massage called ‘Tui Na’.
Sports – This is similar to Swedish massage, but it is geared towards people who engage in sports activity to help prevent or treat injuries.
Deep Tissue Therapy – This massage technique uses slower, more forceful strokes to target the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue, commonly to help with muscle damage from injuries.
Essential Oil Massage – Together with essence obtained from plants such as lavender, this is an additional step towards the therapeutic approach of treating oneself. These essential oils have the ability to calm one or alleviate fatigue or help water retention when incorporated into the massage.
